Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos

Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is ranked at third place of Ryanair’s growth (a low cost European airline), based on its 2015 summer flights schedule. Specifically 75 new flights will be added to the Airports’ schedule, starting August 2015, doubling the number of visitors to Athens in contrast to the same period last year (1.1 million in 2014 while 2.2 million in 2015). London’s airport (STN) holds first place of the company’s growth list with an increase of 127 flights while Madrid’s airport (MAD) is found in second place with 99 flights.

AEGEAN: European Commission’s approval of the acquisition of Olympic Air allows the creation of a viable, dynamic Greek carrier

The acquisition of the shares will be completed by 18.10.2013

Athens, 9 October, 2013 – The European Commission announced today its decision to approve the acquisition of Olympic Air by AEGEAN.

The rationale of the European Commission decision supports the absolute necessity of economies of scale to achieve viability within the Greek aviation market. The acquisition creates the conditions for the establishment of a sustainable Greek carrier, competitive within the Region and capable of supporting a growth momentum which will benefit Greek Tourism and the local economy.

As Greece's new government grapples with the country's colossal debt burden, in one sector at least, there is a little hope. Exports of Greek wines may be tiny when compared with those from countries such as France, Spain and Italy, but for winemakers like Yannis Voyatzis in Velventos, northwestern Greece, sales abroad have risen.

"There is an opportunity," he says, speaking from his winery, Voyatzi Estate, near Lake Polyfytos on the foothills of the Pieria Mountains. "For the first time this year our little winery had lots of demand from export markets. We have a hope that although there is a lot of negative publicity surrounding Greece, there is no negativity toward our wine. In a funny way, maybe it is not a very bad moment for our exports."
